Audrey Hepburn's mother Ella van Heemstra admired Adolf Hitler and he once kissed her hand during a private meeting. The biography writer Matzen reports that Ella and Joseph Ruston were 'enthralled by him and Hitler, especially the concept of Nazism'. Van Heemstra wrote an essay for Mosley on the joys of fascism for his newspaper and he invited them to Munich in 1935 to meet the Fuhrer at his HQ. As she entered the room Ella gazed into Hitler's 'deep blue eyes' and admired his 'enigmatic smile, full of humility'. Even though Ruston was next to her she was swept up with the 'gallant and pleasant' Hitler who 'bowed and touched his lips to her skin.'

Ella had been investigated by Dutch police who concluded that she had been 'unreliable' in her support for her country but did not punish her.

No one can begrudge Audrey Hepburn her success as a film actress, nor can she be held reponsible for the political views and behaviour of her parents. Her charitable work, following her appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 1988, is admirable. What is less laudable, however, is the public persona she presented throughout her career, one which kept her family’s associations with fascism completely secret and even hinted that she had been some kind of teenage anti-Nazi heroine. It’s entirely understandable that Hepburn did not want her audiences to know that both her parents had been dedicated fascists. Her film career took off at a time when the Second World War and the Holocaust were lived experiences for many people, not just distant memories. Recently however, a great deal has been written about her life during that war, most of it speculative and not supported by evidence, that attempts to rewrite history and alter the facts about Audrey Hepburn’s parents. In attempting, rightly, to exonerate the daughter of any personal connection with extreme right-wing politics, it isn’t necessary to conceal or distort the very real activities of her parents. They did not pass their repugnant views onto her. In fact, it must have been unimaginably difficult for Hepburn to deal with her knowledge – and it was undoubtedly a heavily revised and edited knowledge – of her parents’ past lives.

Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston, Audrey Hepburn’s father, adopted the name Hepburn-Ruston at the outbreak of the Second World War. He claimed, at the time, that his mother’s maiden name was Hepburn. This doesn’t appear to be true and it is quite obvious to anyone reading Ruston’s security services files that the comments made by MI5 and Special Branch officers that everything he said should be treated “with discretion” were eminently sensible. There is almost nothing in his life story that can be proved to be true – or false.

Among his more eccentric ideas, he believed he was directly descended on his mother’s side from the Hepburns, an aristocratic Scottish Jacobite family. There is no evidence that this is remotely true, but he cultivated the image. While in detention on the Isle of Man with some of the most hardened and determined British National Socialists, the description sent to MI5 by an Intelligence Officer is striking: “… Hepburn-Ruston has organised the Camp walks. This job is apparently a ‘perk’ of the Aristocracy of the Camp, in which circle Ruston would certainly number himself. … the only view of him I have had in the last six months is a sight of him, resplendent in a pink (I understand the Jacobite colours) tartan kilt, leading his party off for their afternoon walk.”

9 d, C4 o& p+ [8 v# H  V/ _9 v‘Jacobite’ tartan was not pink, and it’s unlikely that Ruston was in any way aristocratic or Scottish, but it’s certainly an example of his flamboyant personality.

Years later, after enduring the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and the intense fighting around her home near Arnhem, Ella van Heemstra would hint that her membership of the British Union of Fascists was the result of the influence of an “evil husband”, but the facts don’t bear this out. Although she may not have been a feminist in any sense we would understand it today, she was a socially confident, independent woman, a member of the European aristocracy who, if she was influenced by anybody, was more likely drawn to fascism through her friendship with Unity and Diana Mitford, both ardent admirers of Hitler. MI5 described both Ruston and van Heemstra as “active members” of the BUF and there’s no reason to doubt it. On one occastion, she went to Rome and laid a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior there on behalf of the British Union of Fascists.

On either side of this letter were letters from fellow fascists that were openly and revoltingly racist and antisemitic. The Blackshirt at this time made no secret of its hatred of Jews and anyone else they did not consider to be ‘white’. Ella van Heemstra was completely aware of this. For biographers of her daughter to claim otherwise is at best disingenuous. Besides, she did not go to Nuremberg with her “evil” husband. She went with her lover, another fascist, the journalist Micky Burn. (Burn had a complicated life, including taking part in the St Nazaire Raid as a commando and being imprisoned in Colditz, but in the 1930s he was an avowed fascist who asked Hitler to sign his personal copy of Mein Kampf.) Far from wanting to escape Ruston’s political influence, Ella was continuously attracted to fascist men and spent the early years of the Nazi occupation of Holland as the lover of businessman M.H.E. Oestreich, who under Nazi rule became Oortsgruppenführer in Arnhem for the NSB, the Dutch Nazi Party. This doesn’t look like the behaviour of someone trying to shake off the influence of a husband whose views she hated.

Ella van Heemstra was questioned by a Canadian officer during the denazification process and he appears to have believed her claims to have helped the resistance, pronouncing her merely “silly”. She did not suffer the humiliation that was meted out to other Dutch women for ‘collaboration’, even though she had been watched from her arrival in Arnhem in 1939 and her mail was monitored. Even though her lover was a Dutch Nazi and their relationship lasted well into the occupation. Even though witnesses swore she had Nazi regalia – including a German eagle and a flag of the Reich, a red field with a black and white swastika inside it – on display in her apartment. Even though the Dutch Resistance newspaper Oranjekrant had listed “Ella van Heemstra, Arnhem” as being “Gestapo.” After a lengthy investigation, she was judged to be “politically unreliable” but that was all.

It was not uncommon for people in van Heemstra’s position to lie about their past involvement with Nazism, indeed many people convinced themselves that they had opposed Hitler.
