In attempting, rightly, to exonerate the daughter of any personal connection with extreme right-wing politics, it isn’t necessary to conceal or distort the very real activities of her parents. This job is apparently a ‘perk’ of the Aristocracy of the Camp, in which circle Ruston would certainly number himself. … the only view of him I have had in the last six months is a sight of him, resplendent in a pink (I understand the Jacobite colours) tartan kilt, leading his party off for their afternoon walk.”

(Burn had a complicated life, including taking part in the St Nazaire Raid as a commando and being imprisoned in Colditz, but in the 1930s he was an avowed fascist who asked Hitler to sign his personal copy of Mein Kampf.) Far from wanting to escape Ruston’s political influence, Ella was continuously attracted to fascist men and spent the early years of the Nazi occupation of Holland as the lover of businessman M.H.E. Oestreich, who under Nazi rule became Oortsgruppenführer in Arnhem for the NSB, the Dutch Nazi Party. Ella van Heemstra was questioned by a Canadian officer during the denazification process and he appears to have believed her claims to have helped the resistance, pronouncing her merely “silly”. She did not suffer the humiliation that was meted out to other Dutch women for ‘collaboration’, even though she had been watched from her arrival in Arnhem in 1939 and her mail was monitored. Even though her lover was a Dutch Nazi and their relationship lasted well into the occupation. Even though witnesses swore she had Nazi regalia – including a German eagle and a flag of the Reich, a red field with a black and white swastika inside it – on display in her apartment. Even though the Dutch Resistance newspaper Oranjekrant had listed “Ella van Heemstra, Arnhem” as being “Gestapo.” After a lengthy investigation, she was judged to be “politically unreliable” but that was all.2 T& ~, \' M8 f0 b" N! It was not uncommon for people in van Heemstra’s position to lie about their past involvement with Nazism, indeed many people convinced themselves that they had opposed Hitler.
